Grounds to sounds

From Grounds to Sounds explores how spent coffee grounds can be transformed from organic waste into a stable, carbon-negative building material. The project investigates coffee grounds as a raw resource, converting them through low-tech pyrolysis into biochar — a material that no longer decomposes, but instead stores carbon over long time spans. What is typically regarded as residue or decay is reframed as a durable architectural substance, shifting coffee waste from a linear life cycle to a permanent spatial role. Through material experiments, coffee-based biochar is tested as a component in lightweight composites and porous assemblies, focusing on acoustic absorption, moisture regulation and tactile qualities. The project positions architecture as an active carbon sink while introducing new sensorial dimensions to architectural surfaces. From Grounds to Sounds connects material research with architectural potential, proposing coffee-derived biochar as both a technical and narrative element in future low-carbon construction.
